Plaza de California is a public plaza in Sacramento, the capital city of California, located between the California State Capitol and the Capitol Mall. Owing to its prominent location in California's capital city, the plaza is often utilized for public demonstrations or official state occasions, such as the inauguration ceremony of the Governor of California.[1][2]

History[edit]

Governor Gavin Newsom's inaugural ceremony in 2023.

The Capitol Fountain was built in 1920, as part of an effort to monumentalize the city core as the home of the government of California.[3][4][5] The Unruh Building and the Mosk Library and Courts (the Sacramento seat of the California Supreme Court) were both built during this initiative, beginning construction in 1922 and finishing in 1928.[6]

In 2023, the plaza was used as the setting for the "California Republic Inauguration", Gavin Newsom's second inauguration ceremony as governor.[7][8]

Landmarks[edit]

The plaza is fronted by three notable government buildings:

To the west of the plaza is the Capitol Mall, a monumental boulevard stretching down to the Sacramento River.

The plaza is home to El Soldado California Mexican-American Veterans Memorial, the California Peace Officers' Memorial, the Supreme Court Justice Stanley Mosk Memorial, and the Capitol Fountain.

Popular culture[edit]

The Plaza de California features as a location in The Sixth Demon series, by R. A. Steffan.[9] It also features as a location in The Wedding March: A David vs. Goliath Battle in Gavin Newsom's Golden State, by Rob Smat.[10]
