Alan Aquino Guedes de Mendonça[1] (born 1988) is a Brazilian politician and lawyer. He is the current mayor of Dourados, the second-largest city in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. He was elected in 2020 as a member of the Progressistas (PP)[2] party, with Dr. Guto as his running mate. He is the 24th mayor of Dourados since its emancipation in 1935.[3][4][5]

Early life and education[edit]

Guedes was born in Dourados, the son of Aquino Guedes de Mendonça and Maria José Guedes. He graduated in law from the State University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UEMS) and in International Relations from the University Center of Anhanguera (Uniderp). He also holds a master's degree in law from the Federal University of Grande Dourados (UFGD).

Career[edit]

Guedes started his career as a lawyer, specializing in civil and administrative law. He also worked as a professor of law and international relations at UEMS and Uniderp. He joined the PP party in 2011 and ran for city councilor in 2012, being elected with 2,049 votes. He was re-elected in 2016 with 2,681 votes, becoming the most voted councilor in Dourados. He also served as the president of the city council from 2019 to 2020.

Mayor of Dourados[edit]

In 2020, Guedes ran for mayor of Dourados, facing six other candidates. He was endorsed by the PP, the Liberal Party (PL), the Republican Party (PR), and the Social Christian Party (PSC). His main opponent was Barbosinha, from the Democrats (DEM), who had the support of the governor Reinaldo Azambuja. Guedes won the election in the first round, with 34,242 votes, corresponding to 33.09% of the valid votes. Barbosinha came in second, with 31,650 votes, or 30.59%.

Guedes took office on January 1, 2021, for a four-year term. His main goals are to promote economic, social, urban, and institutional development in Dourados, with a focus on education, health, anti-corruption, and infrastructure. He has also pledged to improve the public services and the quality of life of the citizens. One of his first actions as mayor was to anticipate the payment of the 13th salary of the municipal employees, making Dourados the first city in the state to do so.[6][7]
