    • Areka** (Ge'ez: አረካ) is a city in southern Ethiopia, located approximately 300 kilometers southwest of the capital, Addis Ababa. The city is situated at a latitude and longitude of 7°4′N 37°42′E and an elevation of 1,774 meters above sea level. Areka serves as the administrative center of the Boloso Sore woreda.

Areka is one of the largest cities in the newly formed Southern region. In recent years, it has experienced significant growth and development, with its population steadily increasing. The city is known for its lush greenery and vibrant community, making it an attractive and thriving place to live. Areka's commitment to sustainable development and its welcoming atmosphere have positioned it as a prominent and progressive city in the region.

Areka is served by a sub-office of the Ethiopian postal service.[1] Areka was founded in 1959, and a primary school opened in the town in 1962.[2] The Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research opened a center in Areka in 1985 dedicated to improving the yield of enset.[3]

Demographics[edit]

Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2023, this town has an estimated total population of 135,245 of whom 66,107 are men and 69,138 are women.[4]

Areka features a tropical savanna climate (Köppen Aw) with average annual rainfall around 1,290 millimetres or 51 inches.
